Define motivation

Last chapter we discussed about what is nutrigenomic and how personalised nutrition can benefits you in crafting your diet plan and living a healthy lifestyle.

In this final chapter, we will discuss about 5 tips to achieve your health and wellness goal based on your diet plan and information that you obtain through personalised nutrition plan.

Your diet plan is what you’ll do, but it is also very important to start with your why. Why are you doing this? Most of the people set out to follow a diet plan when their cholesterol hits a certain level, or to lose weight, but those are outcomes, not motivations

In order to define your motivation, you’ll need to ask yourself 3 questions: Why do I want this outcomes? So that I can? What else?

Here’s a simple example for "I want to lose weight.":

  • Why? To reduce my risk of getting chronic disease.
  • So that I can? Live a longer and improve quality of life.
  • What else? Increase my productivity and energy.
  • So that I can? Complete more task in time.
  • Why? To achieve my goal of building a sustainable business.
It’s just like waking up early every morning, we need to have the motivation to wake up early. So repeat these questions until you paint a beautiful motivation in mind. Record it down in a paper or digitally, whatever feels most powerful to you.

Take it slow. Find you own pace.

While you may have a big goal in mind, it’s better to set smaller goals each week or month that help you slowly get to the big one. Admit it, we have our own pace and sometimes we will face hiccups along the way.

Take it slow, always have back up plan when you fail to reach certain progress. For example, if you can’t make it to the gym due to late meeting, try a workout video at home. If you’re feeling stressed from work or life, try a yoga session instead of your regular strength-focused workout.

Set attainable milestones to follow through, you will be feeling more satisfied achieving them bit by bit, and allow yourself to celebrate when you make it to a certain milestones.

Find a social support system or community.

Having a social support system can make a huge difference when trying to reach your wellness goal. Often, when we try to do it alone, we don’t put ourselves first. A support system creates accountability and encouragement.

For example, you can spend time on the weekend to shop for healthy food options for the week with your workout buddy. When you’re tired and feeling demotivated from workout, your workout buddy will be there to encourage you and keep you accountable.

The support system can be your spouse, best friends, wellness coach or even a group of health-conscious community.

Adopt a new attitude of gratitude

Tony Robbins once said, “When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.”

Be sure that you set some time aside in either the beginning or end of your day to reflect upon what you are thankful for. Keep a journal for yourself or have a daily grateful check-in. These will help you shift your focus and minimize the ever-distorting feeling of stress. Taking time to remind us of the small, everyday positive aspects of our lives will help us develop a sense of balance and perspective that will truly enhance someone’s well-being.

Make your health a priority.

Let’s face the truth, we will always complain we don’t have time to workout or we don’t have time to prepare a healthy meal on our own. It’s all too easy to put our health and wellness on the back burner.

When you make your health a priority, you’ll make time for those things. If you can’t find time to prepare your meal every night, prepare some meals ahead of the time and store it in the fridge. Alternatively, you can get your workout buddy to prepare meal for each other. That will certainly save cost and time.

There’s a will, there’s a way. Most of us don’t really know much about our body, hence we don’t actually know the way to take care of ourselves. To sum up all 3 chapters, having a balanced diet is not enough, but obtaining a personalised balanced nutrition gives you a better shot for a healthy lifestyle.
